In April 2025, numerous taxpayers in Mexico reported delays in receiving refunds of outstanding balances after filing their Annual Tax Return for fiscal year 2024. Although the Tax Administration Service (SAT) claims to be complying with legal deadlines, complaints on social media and in the media have raised concerns among citizens.

Legal deadlines and automatic returns

According to Article 22 of the Federal Tax Code, the SAT has up to 40 business days to process tax refunds from the date the request was successfully submitted. In many cases, automatic refunds are processed within an average of 6 to 8 business days. However, if there are inconsistencies or errors in the return, the process may take up to the legal limit of 40 days.

Common causes of delay or rejection

Several factors can cause delays or rejections in returns:

  • Errors in the interbank CLABE: A misspelled, inactive account, or one that is not in the taxpayer's name prevents deposits.
  • Omission of the return option: If the refund option is not selected when filing the return, the credit balance is not automatically processed.
  • Incorrect use of the e.signature: For returns exceeding $10,000 pesos, it is mandatory to use the e.signature.
  • RFC suspended or tax address not locatable: These situations may stop the return process.
  • Unverifiable deductions: Invoices issued by sanctioned suppliers or expenses without adequate support may cause rejections.
  • Inconsistencies in income or deductions: Differences between what was declared and what was recorded by the SAT may generate additional requirements.

What to do if your return hasn't arrived?

  1. Check the status: Enter the SAT portal (www.sat.gob.mx) and access the Tax Mailbox with your RFC (Tax Identification Number) and password or e-signature. Check for any pending notifications or requests.
  2. Verify bank details: Make sure the interbank CLABE provided is correct and associated with an active account in your name.
  3. Respond to requestsIf the SAT requests additional information, you have 20 business days to respond. Failure to do so may be considered a withdrawal of the refund.
  4. Request manual refund: If the automatic refund was rejected, you can submit a manual request through the Electronic Refund Form (FED) on the SAT portal.
  5. Seek adviceIf problems persist, consider contacting the Taxpayer Defense Office (Prodecon) for free guidance.

It's essential to carefully review your return before submitting it and ensure that all information provided is accurate and properly supported. Stay alert to SAT notifications and respond promptly to avoid delays in the refund of your credit balance.
