The e.signature, formerly known as the Advanced Electronic Signature (FIEL), is a digital file that securely identifies a person when completing online procedures with the Tax Administration Service (SAT) and other government institutions in Mexico. It has the same legal validity as a handwritten signature and is essential for various tax and administrative procedures.
What is the e.signature for?
The e.signature is used to sign contracts and digital documents.
- Request tax refunds.
- Carry out procedures before the IMSS, Infonavit and other agencies.
- Issue electronic invoices.
How to easily process the e-signature?
To obtain your e.signature for the first time, follow these steps
Schedule an appointment: Enter the SAT portal and request an appointment for the e-signature procedure at the nearest office.
- Prepare the documentation: Gather the following documents:
- Valid official identification (INE or passport)
- Recent proof of address (no older than three months).
- Current email address.
- Empty USB flash drive
- Go to your appointmentSubmit your documentation at the SAT office. They'll take your biometric data (fingerprints, photograph, and signature) and provide your e-signature files on a USB drive.
It's important to mention that, according to information from the SAT, the process is free and valid for four years.
Renewal of the e.signature
If your e.signature is about to expire or has already expired, you can renew it:
Online: If it is still valid, you can renew it through the SAT portal using the Certifica application.
In person: If it has expired, schedule an appointment at the SAT and bring the same documents as for the initial application.
